SEO gets your website found on Google. That's still important. But in 2026 a growing share of search behaviour doesn't end on a results page — it ends in an AI-generated answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google Gemini. Those answers cite sources. That's what GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — is about. It's not a replacement for traditional SEO. It's the layer on top of it that determines whether AI engines trust your content enough to quote it.
What GEO Actually Is
When a user asks Perplexity "what's the best alternative to WordPress for a small business," Perplexity doesn't show them a list of links. It generates a synthesized answer, then cites the sources it drew from. Those citations drive traffic — often more qualified traffic than a traditional search click, because the user has already been told your site is authoritative on the topic.
GEO is the practice of structuring your content so that AI crawlers can easily extract it, understand its authority, and cite it with confidence. The signals involved overlap with traditional SEO — quality content, clear structure, strong backlinks — but the emphasis is different. AI engines aren't ranking pages. They're assessing whether a chunk of content is a trustworthy, self-contained answer to a specific question.
The Four Signals That Matter for GEO
1. Self-Contained Content Sections
AI crawlers extract content in chunks, not pages. A section under a clear H2 heading that fully answers a specific question is far more likely to be cited than a page of flowing prose that requires reading from top to bottom to make sense.
This means writing in a structure where each H2 section is its own complete answer. The heading should be a question or a clear statement of what the section covers. The content beneath it should be fully understandable on its own, without context from the rest of the page.
2. Schema Markup — Properly Implemented
Schema.org markup is machine-readable metadata that tells search engines and AI crawlers exactly what your content is. Basic schema — page title, author, date — is table stakes. What actually moves the needle for GEO is richer schema: FAQ schema on pages that answer questions, HowTo schema on instructional content, Organization schema on your about and contact pages, and Article or BlogPosting schema on every piece of editorial content.
When an AI crawler sees properly implemented FAQ schema, it doesn't have to guess whether your content answers questions. You've told it directly, in a format it can parse without ambiguity.
3. A robots.txt That Invites AI Bots
Several major AI crawlers announce themselves by name. If your robots.txt blocks them — or doesn't explicitly allow them — your content may never be indexed for AI citation at all.
The crawlers worth explicitly permitting are OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI/ChatGPT), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), Google-Extended (Gemini), and PerplexityBot. A sensible robots.txt allows all of these while blocking low-value scrapers that consume bandwidth without contributing to discovery.
4. Load Speed and Clean Markup
AI crawlers operate under resource constraints. A slow site or a page full of plugin-generated markup noise — redundant divs, inline styles, JavaScript that must execute before content is readable — makes your content harder to extract accurately and may cause the crawler to deprioritize it in favour of faster, cleaner sources covering the same topic.
This is where the architecture of your site matters in a way that goes beyond traditional SEO. A page that loads in 0.3 seconds and consists of clean, semantic HTML is simply more parseable than a page that takes 4 seconds to load and renders through a JavaScript framework before the text is accessible.
Why Static HTML Sites Have a Structural GEO Advantage
Everything GEO requires maps cleanly onto what a well-built static HTML site already does.
Clean, semantic markup with no plugin noise means AI crawlers can parse your content without fighting through layers of generated code. Sub-second load times from a global CDN mean crawlers get your content fast, every time. Direct control over schema markup means you can implement exactly the right structured data for every page type without depending on a plugin to do it correctly. And a heading structure that reflects your actual content hierarchy — not one distorted by a page builder's output — means the chunk extraction that GEO depends on works as intended.
WordPress sites face the inverse of this. Plugin-generated markup pollutes the HTML that crawlers parse. Page builders produce heading hierarchies that reflect design decisions rather than content structure. Schema plugins add metadata but often implement it incorrectly or inconsistently. Performance overhead slows crawl times.
None of this is insurmountable on WordPress. But it requires deliberate, ongoing effort to fight against the default output of the platform. On a clean static site, GEO-friendly structure is the default.
What This Means in Practice
